The only reading I usually do is to my 6 year old so I really enjoyed this book for older kids and adults. It is full of action and you find yourself really caring about what happens to the spiders (not something I'd do in real life)! There are several strong female characters which always makes me happy and an environmental theme to make you think. Basically it ticks lots of boxes for me and I look forward to the sequel!

With a main character that's an albino spider, living beneath the floorboards of a long abandoned bookshop in a post apocalyptic world... I was expecting this to be quite dark and scary. In fact, it was a tale full of hope and adventure, told with aplomb. Chris paints scenes very well and the world he has built here has enough depth and detail to ensure I knew where I was at all times and had no issue picturing every scene. Without wanting to give too much away *SPOILER* he has a knack for Tolkienesque battle scenes of the highest order too. I read it in one sitting!
